Troubleshooting & Optimizing Activated Sludge Process -

The purpose of this course is to expose wastewater treatment plant operators to the skills needed to effectively troubleshoot and optimize their activated sludge processes. Many operators of wastewater treatment facilities have had little formal training in microbiology and chemistry. However, operators have a high interest in these subjects if the training is kept relevant to what they do. This course provides a relatively in-depth presentation of the microbiology and chemistry needed to understand activated sludge processes.
Most operators have been operating their system on the "this is how we have always done it" basis. Practical, direct strategies for operation and troubleshooting are what they want, not design calculations. This course addresses both the fundamental microbiology and chemistry of activated sludge processes and the practical aspects of operating, optimizing, and troubleshooting. The concept of optimization, as used in this training course, is limited to making improvements in the operation of various unit processes. Optimizing a wastewater treatment system is a broader concept and is beyond the scope of this course.

The purpose of this lesson plan is to explain the role of filtration in the water treatment process and also compare and discuss the various types of filtration and filter media. Furthermore, we will look at how to properly operate and maintain a filter by identifying some typical problem associated with filtration.
The purpose of filtration is to remove the suspended particles that have not settled out of the water. This occurs in nature when water passes through porous layers of soil, in a process called percolation. Similarly, in the water treatment facility it is accomplished by passing the water through granular material known as filter media. The filters usually follow the settling basin and precede the addition of post-filtration chemicals in the water treatment process.
